CALABASH CONTAINER, COVERED IN HAND WOVEN GRASS

From the Mountain Kingdom of Swaziland.
Calabashes are actually a type of pumpkin, which grows in the wild. They are harvested when ripe, the top opened and the flesh and pips are then removed through this opening. They are then left to dry in the sun.
The end product is a very robust container, which are normally used to store water or to make Amazi (buttermilk). Fresh milk is poured into the container and left for a couple of days. A small hole is then made in the base for the whey to run out, leaving the buttermilk in the container.
The calabash is covered with hand woven grass for two purposes: It makes it easier to carry and the container is dipped into water when in the veld, soaking the grass, which keeps the contents nice and cool.
Measurements: 26 cm. (H) X 20 cm. (W) (10.4 X 8 inches)
